Absolutely he would be less motivated and they surely don’t cost that much to get an extra set for home.

i think if the child doesn’t have access to what they need for getting the homework done then it doesn’t really matter whether they’re motivated or not … they’re still not going to get it done.
but i don’t think kids need supplies beyond those necessary for the homework (that is, if you’re doing multiplication problems it’s not a problem if you don’t have the glue and markers, etc.).
though i can’t really imagine parenting without those kind of supplies on hand … not for the homework, but for filling a lot of happy hours.

Definitely yes. Even now at 19, I admit to getting exited come August/September and there’s giant school supply sales. If you set up a small section just for the child, with all of his or her tools and supplies, they’ll be more eager to work. If they have their own space it helps them feel more independent and responsible for something, at least I did. Plus, it can help teach them organizational skills. To make it more fun, let them personalize their area. For example, decorate a plain wooden desk, hang their artwork, let them pick a fun lamp and/or some of the tools, etc, etc.

Oh yeah. Its hard to make a graph, when the only colors you have at home are a blue pen, a black pen, and a pencil. Kids can and do have a "screw it" mentality. And thats probably what they think when they don’t have the tools they need for a project.

If a child is not motivated to do homework without the extra supplies, what makes you think they will be motivated with them? Kids do not like homework and will put it off as long as they can. I remember being one of those kids.

I don’t quite get it. You can’t buy your kid pencils and so on. Yes that is a problem! They can’t do their homework or school projects if they don’t have the right supplies. That would make it impossible to do their homework. duh! what would they right with? I like how your screen name is beer. Maybe you should buy necessities first!

No, I had access to all supplies and such at home, but had no motivation whatsoever to be at school 5 hours a day, then come home and fight with my Mum about homework all evening

I’m not sure if motivation is the right word. If you don’t have the right tools for the job, it becomes very frustrating. Increases anger and stress levels and will make the whole thing an exercise in futility. Unless of course, the person is one that can make due with what they have. Can still obtain a decent grade. That may actually motivate some because of the pride of accomplishment thing. They feel good about themselves because they made the lemonade. It’s an individual/personality thing I would think.
