IF education is one of the keys to future success, why is there such a huge dropout rate in our urban schools?
In Milwaukee they have a higher than 50% dropout rate in High School and a HUGE number of kids drop out even BEFORE H.S.
They get free breakfast, healthcare, lunch, educational supplies, field trips, etc. It does not cost them a thing to get an education YET they don’t value it and don’t want to be there.
Should we make the more accountable for EARNING their education? When you give away too many FREE things people tend to not value it…take it for granted…think is is DESERVED, and therefore the appreciation level goes down.
What do you think?

Democrats use the poor and oppress them for votes. This will not change as long as the poor can be bought.
Welfare is slavery without the work. They are bought and paid for by the Democratic party who doesn’t want them to have a good life and start voting Republican.

Instead of looking at the students, maybe go to the source and see what the teachers union is doing about it.

they can make more money selling drugs to the kids in the suburbs. as for what i think, you sound like you are really miserable in WI,i would move if my state was too far gone to fix.

I think its down to the parents, too bad we can’t spanked them for letting their kids dropped from H.S.

School vouchers for parents who want their child to attend a successful school program will ultimately turn the tide. Either that or abolish the system that removes any culpability from poor teachers. I agree that throwing good money after bad is foolish.
Our children have earned a good education through the taxes we all pay…it’s high time that crappy teachers earn the right to teach our children with accountability for their own performance.

It beats complete privitization of schools. That’s 50% of the students who take advantage of it. Free education is a right. Those who truly work, and there are many of them, should not pay for the failings of student apathy.

There’s a huge dropout rate because students don’t want to learn, and parents don’t discipline their children.
I agree with you about giving things away making people oppose progressing themselves, but education is different. We need to give everyone a chance, and school is the best chance, to improve your life. You get to work for your capabilities. It’s a personal choice. You might consider education socialized, well this is one thing that has to be. If you want people to work for a living to get away from socialism, you have to give them the tools, and education is that tool.

You have to be kidding. The NEA is an integral part of the Democratic machine. You’d have a better chance of getting Ted Kennedy to stop drinking than to get the Democrats to support accountability in the public school system.
Anyway, the less educated one is, the more likely they are to vote for a Democrat. For the Democrats, this is a win-win situation.

I think that they learn too much from their parents. Unfortunately, the learning comes from observation. The parents sit on their butts, scam the system, and then tell the kids that it’s important to get a good education. Meanwhile, the parents sleep in, and don’t even get up to see their kids off to school.
Actions of the parents speak louder than their words. The kids do what is familiar to them.
Asian families (I love bringing them up, as they are a minority) absolutely stress education and enforce good study practices…and it shows.

It is a racial problem. The Whites and Asians value education highly and they live mostly in the suburbs, or they go to private schools. Blacks and Latinos do not value education highly and they are the ones in the urban, public schools. It is up to the Black and Latino people to stress staying in school, staying out of trouble, and getting a good education. However, Black and Latino leaders would rather cry "racism" than point out the problem in their own urban culture!

Education is supposed to be the way we prepare our citizens to "earn" their way to the top of the American experience.
What you’re proposing is insane. Should we let toddlers "earn" their diapers ? These are still KIDS.
Besides you should be happy, the dropouts reduces the rate at which the breakfast, healthcare, lunch (etc, etc) is used. That means money remains in the hierarchal chain (i.e., it stays w/ the government, it’s not spent).
Isn’t that what you idiots like ?

Yes it is true that some do drop out and some men simply will not work. But the majority of the students do graduate.
I have heard so many young people tell me I quit high school there was so many bullies and I wasn’t learning anything.
Later they go into adult education and learn everything from nursing to accountanting. Then go on to have very productive lives. Dropping out of high school does not mean the child is a failure the rest of his life. That is a very wrong message to be sending out to young people.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen dropped out of college and played with radio tubes in their fathers garage.
One boy who was slow loved to dig holes drove his father crazy. He had this thing for back hoes and learned to run one and made a lot of money, invested in real estate and now is a millionaire, in California. A high school drop out.
Who they said couldn’t learn. My brother in law.
He spent more time in the principals office then in the class room. Maybe they feel as he did the schools wasn’t teaching him anythng he could use to support himself.

Your question is both confusing an unfocused.
Yes, education is a key to "success."
If someone drops-out, what does that have to do with the fact that it is PUBLIC EDUCATION, paid for by the PUBLIC.
You are so obsessed with the concept that someone, anyone in this world might be getting something undeserved.
No one is going to take notice of this or do anything about it.
Write your representative instead of Yahoo…

Its the duty of parents, teachers& social worker to motivate children for study. If req. incentive in form of cash award to be given. Drop out students are more among parents who themselves were dropouts. Its the duty of social workers to motivate those parents who wants there words to be bread winer at an early age, particularly in under developed countries.

We do have a high Drop out rate–Bill Gates and Oprah have taken this as a personal issues and shows have been made on it.
You have a good point in the sense that I think people do take for "granted" our educational system. A failure to appreciate all that is offered. Seems back in history a bit like the Pioneers Days many beg for the opportunity to learn just how to read and write. And they didn’t have all we have and offer.
And I think that failure to appreciate goes on all sides–Parents , Teachers and Students. Corruption is thick all around. People often turn their heads to wrong or just can’t do anything about it.
What do I think you ask? I think it is time we faced all the issues without worrying who is the blame. Or who gets what.. Or what can we give that is pleasurable but not necessarily what people really need. And create an atmosphere where students can see control and order and thrive to learn. We need an education.that affects not only the mind but the heart so as to transform people from within. We need better Teachers and People who set and show better standards to right and wrong. People who understand what is really needed for future success in their lives.
