what are "qualifying educational expenses" when filing with financial aid?
So I understand that tuition is a qualifying educational expense…but i’m confused about everything else. What about my books, if they were required for a class? Is that a qualifying expense? And school supplies?

If you’re asking about education credits, the amounts you can claim are expenses paid out of pocket or with loans, but NOT with scholarships or grants. Qualifying education expenses for the Hope or Lifetime Learning credits are tuition and fees. For the new American Opportunity credit, tuition, fees, and required books and supplies (not a laptop you use for school) are qualifying expenses.
